Checklist: what to ask before booking your wedding's sound and lighting

Sound and lighting, along with catering and the venue, define how a wedding actually feels in the room. Choosing a supplier on price alone is the most common mistake. Here are the questions that really make a difference.

Is the equipment their own or subcontracted?

A supplier who subcontracts gear at the last minute can't guarantee its condition or compatibility. Ask explicitly whether the sound, lighting and effects belong to the company you're booking.

How many technicians will be on site?

A large event can't rely on one person managing sound, lighting, effects and the DJ set all at once. Ask how many team members will be physically present.

Have they assessed the venue?

The sound power needed and the type of lighting change completely between an indoor hall, a marquee and an outdoor garden. A serious supplier asks for floor plans, photos, or visits the venue.

What happens if there's a technical issue?

Ask about the contingency plan: backup equipment, a generator for outdoor events, the protocol if a microphone fails during the ceremony.

What exactly does the quote include?

Ask for the quote to break down equipment, staff, setup/teardown and travel separately. A detailed, fixed quote is the best sign there won't be surprises later.
